Auditzo Technical Review Methodology

How Auditzo Conducts Evidence-Based Website Audits

Auditzo combines automated observation, controlled browser testing and human verification to document website privacy, tracking, consent and accessibility behaviour within an agreed scope.

The methodology is designed to produce clear technical findings, supporting evidence and remediation-oriented observations for engineering, privacy, business and counsel review.

Technical evidence and findings only. Auditzo does not provide legal advice, certify compliance or guarantee that every possible issue has been identified.

Why methodology matters

A reliable audit needs more than scanner output

Technical findings are useful only when the tested scope, evidence source, verification method and limitations are clear enough for another team to understand and act on.

Scope must be defined

Findings are meaningful only when reviewed pages, environments, states, journeys and exclusions are clearly documented.

Evidence must be traceable

Technical observations should connect to screenshots, requests, storage records, affected pages, components or reproduction steps.

Candidates need verification

Automated output should not automatically become a confirmed privacy, tracking or accessibility finding.

Limitations must be recorded

A point-in-time review should state what was tested, what was excluded and what may vary by location, browser, session or website change.

Audit methods

Audit methods available through Auditzo

Each review path provides a different level of coverage and evidence. Automated reviews are no-interaction; manual consent-state and accessibility testing are separately scoped services.

Free Privacy Scan

A quick automated, no-interaction review of observable cookies, browser storage and third-party requests during the initial public-page session.

Coverage boundary: No human verification, Accept/Decline interaction or downloadable raw evidence package.

Detailed Automated Report

A completely automated, no-interaction review that provides expanded structured observations beyond the free scan.

Coverage boundary: No human review, consent-banner interaction, separate Accept/Decline testing, HAR download, cookie export or raw evidence package.

Manual Tracking & Consent Audit

A human-reviewed audit of agreed pages, journeys and consent states with evidence collected for the defined scope.

Coverage boundary: Can include screenshots, HAR and request evidence, cookie and browser-storage comparisons, cache-related observations and consent-state records.

WCAG Accessibility Audit

Automated candidate discovery combined with human keyboard, semantic, visual, responsive and component-level verification.

Coverage boundary: Includes verified findings, supporting evidence, WCAG-oriented mapping and developer-focused remediation guidance.

Review lifecycle

From scope definition to report delivery and retesting

The exact activities depend on the selected audit, but the core methodology follows a documented sequence so findings remain understandable and traceable.

01

Define scope

Confirm domains, pages, journeys, regions, browsers, states, deliverables, exclusions and review objectives.

02

Prepare environment

Record the browser, location, date, profile state and other relevant test conditions for the reviewed session.

03

Capture evidence

Observe requests, cookies, storage, consent behaviour, screenshots or accessibility interactions included in the scope.

04

Verify findings

Reproduce candidates and confirm, reject, downgrade or classify them based on observed behaviour and available evidence.

05

Build report

Connect findings to affected pages, evidence, technical priority, remediation guidance and documented limitations.

06

Retest or monitor

Repeat relevant observations after changes or monitor meaningful privacy and tracking activity over time.

1. Define the scope

Start with a documented audit scope

Auditzo confirms what is being reviewed before evidence collection begins.

Scope can include domains, representative pages, critical user journeys, geographic environments, browsers, consent states, accessibility coverage, third-party components, deliverables and known exclusions.

A clear scope prevents findings from being interpreted as if every page, user state or platform variation was tested.

Example audit-scope record

  • Website: example.com
  • Representative pages: Homepage, product, cart and checkout
  • Review region: California, United States
  • Consent states: Initial, Accept and Decline
  • Browser: Recorded Chromium environment
  • Privacy evidence: Requests, cookies, storage, screenshots and scoped exports
  • Accessibility coverage: WCAG 2.2 AA-oriented manual review
  • Example exclusion: Authenticated account area unless specifically included
2. Prepare the environment

Create a repeatable technical baseline

A recorded environment helps explain why a specific request, consent state or accessibility behaviour was observed during the reviewed session.

Geographic environment

The testing region is recorded because consent interfaces, tags and third-party behaviour may differ by location.

Browser and version

The browser family and version are documented where they are relevant to reproducing the observed behaviour.

Controlled browser state

Fresh or isolated browser states are used where required so previous cookies or choices do not unintentionally affect a session.

Date and time

Audit evidence records when the website behaviour was observed because website and vendor implementations can change.

Known limitations

Access restrictions, regional differences, dynamic content and third-party platform limitations are recorded with the review.

3. Select pages and journeys

Review representative pages and real user journeys

Homepage-only scanning can miss tracking, consent and accessibility behaviour that appears only after search, form interaction, product selection, cart actions, checkout or embedded-service use.

Entry pages

  • Homepage
  • Landing page
  • Campaign page

Discovery journeys

  • Search
  • Category
  • Filters
  • Listings

Commerce journeys

  • Product
  • Cart
  • Checkout
  • Payment handoff

Conversion journeys

  • Contact form
  • Newsletter
  • Booking
  • Signup

Embedded systems

  • Maps
  • Media
  • Chat
  • Third-party widgets

Restricted areas

  • Accounts
  • Dashboards
  • Authenticated flows when scoped

Scope boundary: Auditzo reviews the pages and journeys included in the agreed scope. Findings should not be assumed to represent untested pages or authenticated areas.

4. Test consent states

Compare website behaviour before and after consent choices

Consent-state testing is performed only in applicable manual privacy audits. The Free Privacy Scan and Automated Detailed Review remain no-interaction reviews.

Initial state

Observe what loads before the visitor interacts with the consent interface.

Accept state

Record observable website activity after the visitor accepts the available consent choice.

Decline state

Record what remains after non-essential consent is declined or rejected.

Preference change

Where included, review behaviour after preferences are modified or consent is withdrawn.

Evidence that may be captured

The evidence package depends on the agreed manual scope and the behaviour available during the recorded sessions.

The presence of a request, cookie or script does not by itself establish a legal violation. Purpose, configuration, consent signals and applicable law may require privacy or counsel review.

  • Cookies observed in each reviewed state
  • localStorage and sessionStorage records
  • Third-party domains and network requests
  • Request destination, method, resource type and timing where relevant
  • Request parameters or consent signals where relevant and appropriate
  • Screenshots of consent UI and website states
  • HAR or request-level files in applicable manual scopes
  • Cookie, storage and cache-related comparisons in applicable manual scopes
5. Connect evidence to findings

Build request, cookie and storage evidence that teams can trace

Manual privacy findings can be linked to the page, consent state, screenshot, HAR file, request record, cookie comparison or browser-storage evidence that supports the observation.

HAR and raw evidence files are not included in the Automated Detailed Review. They are available only where included in an applicable manual audit scope.

Example evidence-linked finding format

  • Finding ID: EC-003
  • Page: Cart
  • Reviewed state: Decline
  • Observed activity: A third-party request remained visible after the recorded consent choice.
  • Supporting evidence: decline-cart.har and EC-003-01.png
  • Finding status: Confirmed technical observation
  • Recommended next step: Review implementation purpose, consent configuration and vendor behaviour.
6. Classify activity

Organize observed third-party website activity

Classification helps technical, privacy and business teams understand the likely role of observed domains and services.

Classification is based on observable technical context and available vendor information. It should be reviewed alongside the website owner’s implementation purpose and legal assessment.

Common technical categories

  • Analytics and measurement
  • Advertising and conversion tracking
  • Session replay and behavioural analytics
  • Customer engagement and support
  • Embedded media and social content
  • Payment, fraud prevention and security
  • Content delivery and website infrastructure
  • Unknown or requires further review
7. Verify accessibility manually

Human-reviewed WCAG accessibility testing

Accessibility audits combine automated candidate discovery with manual verification. Automated results are treated as candidates, not automatically confirmed findings.

Automated candidate discovery

  • Automated accessibility rule candidates
  • Repeated semantic or component patterns
  • Potential contrast, naming and structural concerns
  • Candidate issues across selected templates and pages

Candidates are reconciled, reproduced and reviewed before they are reported as verified findings.

Manual verification can include

  • Keyboard navigation and focus order
  • Visible focus and keyboard traps
  • Accessible names and control purpose
  • Forms, labels, instructions and errors
  • Headings, landmarks and semantic structure
  • Links, buttons and repeated actions
  • Contrast, text spacing and visual states
  • Responsive reflow and content visibility
  • Images and non-text content
  • Dialogs, frames and third-party components

Findings are conservatively mapped to relevant WCAG success criteria based on the observed behaviour and available evidence.

8. Verify and classify

Convert candidates into evidence-linked findings

Auditzo does not turn scanner output directly into compliance claims. Candidates are reviewed, reproduced and assigned an appropriate status before report delivery.

01

Candidate

An automated tool, manual review or evidence comparison identifies a potential issue.

02

Reproduce

The behaviour is reviewed again under the relevant page, state or interaction.

03

Capture evidence

Screenshots, requests, storage records or interaction evidence are connected to the observation.

04

Classify

The candidate is confirmed, rejected, downgraded, marked for review or recorded as a limitation.

05

Assign finding ID

Confirmed findings receive a stable reference for remediation, discussion and retesting.

Possible review statuses

Not every candidate becomes a confirmed finding. Statuses help separate verified issues, observations, limitations and items that require more context.

  • Confirmed finding
  • Observation only
  • Needs further review
  • Not reproduced
  • Out of scope
  • Third-party limitation
  • Unable to test
9. Assign technical priority

Prioritize findings using technical and user-impact context

Technical review priority helps teams plan remediation. It is not a legal conclusion, statutory penalty assessment or compliance certification.

User impact

Issues that prevent access, completion or meaningful use generally require earlier review.

Repeatability

Consistently reproducible behaviour provides a stronger basis for prioritization and remediation.

Affected journeys

Business-critical journeys such as checkout, signup, booking or form submission may require higher priority.

Repeated components

One shared template or component issue may affect many pages and users.

Data or consent significance

Observable activity involving user data, consent choices or third-party destinations may need prompt technical review.

Third-party dependency

Fix timing and ownership may depend on platforms, plugins, apps, vendors or embedded services.

10. Quality assurance

Review the report package before delivery

Auditzo checks the relationship between scope, findings, evidence, wording and limitations before a manual report is finalized.

The purpose is to reduce missing evidence, duplicated findings, unsupported claims and unresolved draft content.

Quality checks can include

  • Agreed scope, tested pages and review states verified
  • Evidence files and screenshots checked for completeness
  • Findings reproduced where applicable
  • Evidence references matched to finding IDs
  • Duplicate or overlapping findings reconciled
  • WCAG mappings reviewed conservatively
  • Technical priority and remediation notes reviewed
  • Legal-safe wording and scope boundaries checked
  • Placeholders, draft markers and unresolved notes removed
  • Limitations and exclusions documented
  • Report version and delivery package confirmed
Evidence package

What an Auditzo evidence package may include

Deliverables vary by selected service and agreed scope. Raw evidence files are available only in applicable manual audit engagements.

Executive summary

A concise overview of scope, key observations, priority themes and important limitations.

Findings register

Structured findings with stable IDs, affected pages, evidence references and recommended next steps.

Consent-state comparisons

Cookie, browser-storage, cache-related and request comparisons across scoped consent states.

Request-level evidence

HAR, domain and network evidence where included in a manual privacy audit scope.

Accessibility evidence

Verified findings, screenshots or interaction evidence, WCAG references and remediation guidance.

Retest addendum

A follow-up record showing whether selected observations were resolved, changed or remained visible.

11. Retest and monitor

Document what changed after remediation

A retest repeats relevant observations in a recorded environment after selected fixes or configuration changes.

Safe retest wording focuses on what was reproduced. For example: “The original technical observation was no longer reproduced in the recorded retest environment.”

Discuss Retesting

Retest statuses can include

  • Resolved in the recorded retest environment
  • Partially resolved
  • Still observed
  • Unable to retest
  • Behaviour changed
  • New related issue observed

Monitoring and follow-up can include

  • New scripts or third-party domains
  • New or changed cookies and storage activity
  • Meaningful consent-interface or tag-firing changes
  • Removed or reintroduced privacy and tracking activity
  • Month-over-month technical differences where supported
  • Accessibility retesting after relevant design, content or code changes

Privacy monitoring should not be interpreted as continuous WCAG validation. Accessibility retesting is generally performed after relevant design, content or code changes.

Important boundaries

Methodology scope and limitations

Auditzo provides technical observations, supporting evidence and remediation-oriented findings within a defined scope. Limitations are part of the methodology, not hidden after delivery.

  • A review records website behaviour observed at a specific point in time.
  • Coverage is limited to the agreed pages, states, journeys, environments and components.
  • Untested pages or authenticated areas should not be assumed to behave the same way.
  • Geographic location, browser state, account status and dynamic content can affect results.
  • Website code, consent tools and third-party services can change after the review.
  • Automated tools have detection limits and may produce false positives or miss contextual issues.
  • Manual testing is limited to the agreed coverage and available access.
  • The presence of a request, cookie, script or accessibility barrier does not by itself establish a legal violation.
  • Auditzo does not provide legal advice, certify legal compliance or guarantee that every possible issue has been identified.
  • Final legal interpretation and framework applicability should be handled by qualified counsel.
